Mirrored Countries: objects, images, flavours, memories: cultural encounters between Brazil and Portuguese-speaking African nations

Group exhibition
Brazil, São Paulo . 2021

Mirrored Countries brings together revealing references to the cultural and emotional closeness between Brazil and the five Portuguese-speaking African countries: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe. It is common for us Brazilians to be surprised on arriving in these countries, even by the way Portuguese is spoken, different from ours and from that of Portugal too. There is a sense of recognition, the impression of being close to home, or of having already seen something from there, lived a similar situation. At the same time, the cultural diversity brings admiration and the pleasure of encountering something new, with its own defined identity, different from us and, for that very reason, enchanting.
