Far from looking fondly at the past as an isolated, idealised artefact, the exercise was to understand ‘roots’ or ‘history’ for what they truly are. Not merely origins, but continuous parts of a living organism. Looking at the past within the present and understanding that, with or despite all the wonderful or regrettable developments in history, the present moment is also part of our cultural heritage.
